core web vitals

We all know that Google has many factors based on which it ranks the site, right. A website should be mobile-friendly, fast loading, having quality content, SEO-friendly, and engaging enough. These are some ranking factors that Google concerns to rank your site. But one more factor tech giant Google will consider ranking the site. Do you know which factor Google is going to consider? I tell you – it is Core Web Vitals (CWV).

Back in early May, Google introduced Core Web Vitals. Google is introducing new ranking signals which will combine Core Web Vitals with existing user experience signals to improve the way it evaluates the overall experience provided by a page.

Do you want to know about Core Web Vitals and how they are important? Just keep your eyeballs here to learn everything about CWV. I will start with the basics first.

What exactly Core Web Vitals are?

In very simple words, Core Web Vitals are a set of specific metrics or factors that Google considers significant in a webpage’s overall user experience. These vitals include real-world, user-centered metrics, that give scores on aspects of your page including load time, interactivity, and the stability of content as it loads. However, Core Web Vitals are made up of three specific page speed and user interaction measurements:

1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

This metric measures loading performance. It provides a good user experience only if it occurs within 2.5 seconds of when the page first starts loading.

2. First Input Delay (FID)

FID metrics measure interactivity. If you want to provide a good user experience, your page should have an FID of less than 100 milliseconds.

3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

The third metric of Core Web Vital is CLS which measures visual stability. Therefore, to provide a good user experience the page should maintain a CLS of less than 0.1.

Core Web Vitals become a new ranking factor of Google

Yes guys, few months ago, Google announced an upcoming change to search rankings that will incorporate Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. Google has decided to introduce a new ranking signal that combines CWV with existing user experience signals. So to enhance the way it evaluates the overall experience provided by a page.

According to Google, “Core Web Vitals are a set of real-world; user-centered metrics that quantify key aspects of the user experience. They measure dimensions of web usability such as load time, interactivity, and the stability of content as it loads (so you don’t accidentally tap that button when it shifts under your finger – how annoying!)”

Moreover, Google will combine Core Web Vitals with other factors like mobile-friendliness, website security, and many more factors to comprehend the evaluation of a page’s user experience.

Where Core Web Vitals (CWV) will affect ranking?

Core Web Vitals are now a new ranking factor on the basis of which your site will be given a ranking. However, it will surely affect all your regular search results, mobile, desktop, based on certain grounds. Moreover, Core Web Vitals will become criteria to appear in Google Top Stories.

Earlier, Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) was required to appear in those Top Stories but now it is going away. It is because now AMP will not be a requirement anymore to appear in Top Stories. Therefore, it is possible that CWV may potentially affect a lot of ranking results.

Let’s dig deeper and know how you can use Core Web Vitals for your Search Engine Optimization.

How one can use Core Web Vitals for their SEO?

No doubt, the initial stages for Google’s new ranking factor Core Web Vitals will be frustrating, but when you track your site’s Core Web Vitals it will help your SEO efforts quite a bit. We all know that Google always asks webmasters to provide a great user experience to their users but people don’t listen. However, now you have actual hard data that you can track and analyze to ensure that you are, it indeed will provide users with a positive page experience.

Let me tell you that providing users with a great page experience is crucial for SEO. However, Google also looks for other ranking signals like trust, relevance, and content quality. These factors consider being primary elements that determine the search rankings. Core Web Vitals, on the other hand, serve in more of a “tie-breaker” role when two pages have content of relatively equal relevance and quality.

It means if your page has poor Core Web Vital scores, it will outrank those with better page rank experiences for more better and relevant content.

The upcoming ranking signal will be known as the page experience signal. The page experience signal will include Core Web Vitals and many other metrics such as:

  • HTTPS Security
  • Mobile-Friendliness
  • Intrusive interstitial guidelines
  • Safe-browsing
