410 Error

We all come across a page showing 404 error on Google, right. I personally feel 404 error page is a major blunder for any website owner if it happens on their site. This is an error that basically affects your entire website. And when a visitor visits your site and sees your page appearing as “404 error” then it is the most negative review you gonna have from visitors. You will eventually see the huge loss in your ranking on Google’s SERP. The same is the case with 410 page error. You know what Google also doesn’t count or rank such pages. So it’s like your website going to seeds!

But the good news here is that recently Google announced to crawl and index your 410 pages anytime. Guys do read this article till the end and know the important update of Google for 410 pages.

First understand what 410 page is?

In very simple words, 410 page is an error which is called Gone error. It is an HTTP response status code indicating that the resource requested by the client has been permanently deleted. It basically tells clients that you should not expect an alternative redirection or forwarding address.

Furthermore, if a 410 error happens, it might affect the overall performance of your website. But Google now crawls your 410 pages. Let’s read the update below.

Google to crawl and index your 410 pages

In the middle of May month, Google talked about 410 pages when someone asked how you will index and crawl 410 pages. Someone asked on Twitter “For how long will Googlebot pingback an URL for which 410 status code issues?”

The John Muller of Google answered on Twitter, “there is no fixed duration.” It simply means there has not specified any time duration as to when it will try to crawl and index a page that is returning a 410 status code. Therefore, it depends on the site to site and error to error.

HTTP Status Code 410 – Gone (Important Status Code for SEOs)

410-page error is the same as the 404 error page. It simply means the page is gone. Here the page is no longer available from the server and no forwarding address has been set up. Therefore, any link you have on your site that is pointing to a 410 page is sending bots and visitors to dead resources. In case, you see any of the errors you see them, just try to remove references or links from your content.

Why HTTP Status Code and Errors matter for Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization is a broad concept and is an essential part of the digital world. SEO bots see HTTP status codes when they crawl your site. It is because the search engine perceives the health of your site. But frankly speaking, higher-level codes 400-500 matter for SEO. These codes prevent bots from crawling and indexing your pages. Therefore, if your pages have too many of these errors then it will impact the quality of your site and thereby lowering your rankings.

In addition, 100-200 level HTTP status codes won’t have much impact on your SEO. And 300 level codes have a more complicated relationship with SEO. The main thing you need to understand here is the impact and the difference between permanent and temporary redirects.

Final words

The 410 error page is similar to 404 “not found” page. But the main difference here is that 410 indicates that the condition is permanent. Therefore, if your site also shows 410 error page then Google will crawl and index your pages. But Google has not specified the right time and fixed duration for crawling and indexing your pages. Moreover, you can also fix 410 page error.
